Dental Checkups for Your Baby

When Your Child Should Visit the Dentist
Like most parents, you want to start your child off on the right step when it comes to their dental health. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, your child should have their first checkup by the time their first tooth comes in, generally around the time of their first birthday. With a good examination and preventive care education, you can ensure your child's healthy, happy smile for years to come.

Home Care for Your Baby
The sooner you start cleaning your child's teeth and gums, the better! Starting at birth, a baby's gums should be cleaned with a soft infant toothbrush or a cloth and water. When teeth begin to appear, start brushing twice daily with a soft, age-appropriate sized toothbrush. Remember, you'll have to assist your child's brushing; young children don't have the ability to effectively brush their teeth on their own.

Primary Teeth: More Important than You May Think
Even though your young child's teeth aren't permanent, they are very important to your child's growth and development. Having healthy primary (baby) teeth allows for proper chewing, jaw growth, and speech. They are also important space savers for adult teeth. Tooth decay in infants can lead to pain, infection, poor weight gain, premature loss of baby teeth, and can even affect the health of permanent teeth yet to come in.

If you have any questions regarding the health of your infant's mouth, please feel free to contact our office. We have years of experience treating smiles of all ages and are more than happy to help you ensure your child's health and well-being for years to come.
